LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects is an award-winning landscape architectural practice providing comprehensive planning and site design services throughout the United States for over 15 years.

Mathews Nielsen designs landscapes that respond meaningfully to the people and site for which they are designed. The firm’s energy is invested into collaborative, place-based design in which the existing landscape, as well as its cultural and ecological context are actively engaged to create lasting, memorable places. Sustainability is a natural product of a focus on the individual needs of a particular location. Fresh perspectives evolve from work with an unusually diverse range of clients and project types. Responsive and responsible designs develop out of a commitment to working in a collaborative manner.

Projects include master plans for educational and cultural institutions; site plans for residential communities and commercial centers, landscape designs for museums, performing art centers, corporate facilities, and full design services for waterfronts, parks and transportation corridors. Mathews Nielsen’s goal for each of these projects is to create public and private places that inspire and refresh the human spirit.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Founded in 2002 by Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors is a comprehensive design firm based in New York City. Having worked together for almost two decades, Standefer and Alesch have forged an ability to create projects that consistently find the tension between spontaneity and rigor, high and low, and past and future. The result is an oeuvre of instant classics – projects that transcend architecture and interiors and rise to the level of cultural polemics.

Among the firm’s completed and current projects are: the renovation of the iconic Royalton Hotel, the Standard Hotel for hotelier Andre Balazs – including the Standard Grill and the 18th Floor Club – and the new Ace Hotel – including The Breslin restaurant and Stumptown Coffee Shop – all in New York City. The firm has designed major residential projects on extraordinary sites around the world, many for important Hollywood celebrities, including the recently completed renovation and expansion of one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s significant Usonian houses. Standefer and Alesch’s own homes, in Manhattan and Montauk, are, perhaps, the purest expression of the couple’s interests and act as design laboratories and inspirations for the firm’s projects.

New projects currently on the boards include a second new building – a hotel tower – on 57th Street, two prominent new restaurants – a second space for Ken Friedman at the Ace Hotel and one for Andrew Carmellini in SoHo – and the firm’s first retail store for Cole Haan.
